FORENSICS

The awareness of microscopes for forensics was catapulted by the popularity of television shows like CSI. Microscopes are used to observe and compare:

• Trace Evidence: Fibers, hair, soil, wood, gunshot residue, pollen, etc.
• Chemical Evidence: Residue, accelerants, poisons, drugs, cosmetics, body fluids, paint, etc.

The evidence may be collected during criminal or civil investigations, or may investigated for academic endeavors such as studying paint composition in art works of the grand masters. In forensic anthropology, microscopic and macroscopic examination of tissue, bone and other remains are used to determine factors leading to death.
